"How many shades of blue? Aquamarine, turquoise, cerulean, ultramarine, French ultramarine, indanthone, Prussian, sapphire, lapis azul, pthalo, cobalt, cobalt teal, indigo, violet. Astride my board at "Crystal Corner" my painter's mind attempts to make pigmented order of it all, the clarity of water over the reef, the turquoise edge and infinite indigo of the drop-off. The peeling cylinders are blown-glass tubes of green so vibrant my eyes strain to register the glow. Just when I've made sense of it all I glide silently over a school of aquamarine parrot fish and I'm back to zero on the color wheel. My tubes of paint lie helpless in their box."
