It is well known that the Islands of Hawai’i have a bounty of natural wonders. Some of the most beautiful of wonders are the incredibly diverse and rare birds found only on the islands of Hawai’i. The vast array of manu, the word for bird in the Hawaiian language, evolved with unique adaptations because of their isolated and ecologically rich environment. From the almost extinct Hawaiian crow, the Alala, to the state bird of Hawai'i, the Nene or Hawaiian goose, I have come to understand how precious these creatures are. These manu are the living treasures of the Hawaiian Islands, and in my painting them I hope to honor their unique and rare beauty.
